Think of fresh fruit in Poitou-Charentes, and you might be forgiven for thinking of grapes. There is, however, much more to local fruit than the region’s most famous export. On hot summer nights, when you are in need of a little refreshment, you could choose a bottle of non-alcoholic jus de pomme pétillant (sparkling apple juice) from a local producer. Available in specialist shops, supermarkets and at farmers’ markets, you will often come across fresh or pasteurised juices produced by independent artisans or small cooperatives, as well as by companies whose names are known nationally.

Around Secondigny in the Deux-Sèvres a thousand hectares are dedicated to apple production and so you will find many local producers and markets nearby that sell apple juice.
