Les Nuits Romanes 2015

Les Nuits Romanes 2015

The 2015 'Nuits Romanes' begin on Friday in Poitou-Charentes - just what are they and why should they be in everyone's diary this summer?

One of the highlights of the summer season in Poitou-Charentes are the 170 free events that make up the Nuits Romanes, a series of free events performed in and around the region's marvellous Romanesque monuments.

Now in it's 11th year, the festival starts at the beautiful UNESCO Heritage Site at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe this Friday before travelling around the region until coming to a close on 5 September in the shadow of the church Saint-Hilaire in Melle.

On Friday, the company CirkVOST will present BoO, an aerial circus act in which eight acrobats perform on a giant 'Mikado' (like the pick-up sticks we played in our youth) made from 368 giant bamboo canes covering 600m2.

The summer programme includes aerial and acrobatic acts, fireworks and pyrotechnics and live music. Plus there are several visiting American artists in honour of the Franco-American links being forged with the voyage of the frigate Hermione to the USA.

To find out what is on near you, simply search on the website Nuits Romanes which includes a useful map feature. Alternatively flick through the progamme below.

All events start at 9pm but if you plan to go to one of the key events, then make sure you get there early if you don't want to be in the centre of the large crowd. Be careful with young children and dogs as these events can get very busy with acts walking through the crowds on stilts etc., the Melle event in particular can feel claustrophobic. However, as the main events are aerial ones, everyone has a good view!
